We are always happy to show the work, and this Chapel Hill, TN project is a good one. A plain, tired concrete surface became a warm, wood-look feature that will hold up far longer than real planks would in the same spot.
The challenge: boring concrete
The original surface was showing its age — cracks, surface wear, and a flat, uninviting look. The homeowner wanted warmth and character without taking on the maintenance that comes with wood.
Our process, step by step
- Grinding the concrete. We ground the existing surface down to remove rough patches, stains, and imperfections, leaving a clean, even, properly profiled slab.
- MVB primer. A moisture vapor barrier primer went down to stop moisture moving up through the slab, which is the most common reason decorative finishes fail.
- Crack repair. Cracks were patched and feathered so they would not telegraph through the finished surface.
- Troweled wood overlay. A cementitious overlay was troweled out to working thickness across the area.
- Hand-carved detail. Plank lines and grain were carved by hand, then color was built in layers so the surface reads with real depth instead of one flat tone.
- Sealing. The finish was sealed with 100% solid epoxy and finished with a matte urethane topcoat for traffic protection and a natural, low-sheen look.
Why this finish holds up
Wood warps, rots, and needs refinishing. This surface is concrete the whole way down — it just happens to look like wood. Sweeping and occasional rinsing is the maintenance plan.
